Materials

I invite you to work with materials that you love. You can use art materials you have at home or the suggested supplies below. Products can be found online at Amazon, Michaels, or at your local art store.

  • Cray-pas expressionist oil pastels—a soft oil pastel for blending, great colors and textures, Chalk pastels

  • Prismacolor colored pencils
    (or any brand is fine)

  • Markers, tempera stick, Paint Pens

  • Watercolor sets: Prang, Angora (there are many paint pan options!)

  • Tempera paints (Blick or Chromatemp) are water based paints similar to acrylics, but easier to clean up

  • Paint brushes—a flat brush and a round brush, varied sizes

  • Paper options: Pad of Strathmore or Canson mixed media or water color paper: 12” x 18” or 18” x 24” (140 lbs)

  • You can also use wire-bound 9 x 12 sketch paper, or journals by Canson or Strathmore

Additionally, you can purchase a role of Kraft paper and masking tape to work on your wall if you would like to create big!

If you enjoy working with collage materials begin collecting words and images over the course of a few weeks from newspapers, magazines, books, catalogues, packaging, stamps, tissue paper, origami paper, organic materials (leaves) and miscellaneous (yarn, feathers, fabric).  You can organize found collage materials by subject (animals, places, words, people, misc.) or in whatever way that makes sense to you. Additionally, you’ll need scissors and glue.
